Magnet in 3D Touch Bed

Why is there a magnet in the 3D Touch bed? It is near the center and I feel it everytime I get a part off with the metal scraper. It is the thicker board from BFB, not the thin one that it came with.

That makes sense!

Dave, I am rebuilding the extruders after getting my new bearings. I removed the sensor and now I am ready to put it back. Is there a dimension that the sensor needs to be from the bottom of the nozzles (or somewhere else). When I removed it, I didn't measure it!
Thanks

Thanks!
It is used to set the z height ( the distance of the nozzle above the bed).
there is a magnetic switch/sensor just behind the nozzles (a small black tube) . When the print starts the head is moved over the magnet and the bed moves up until the sensor detects the magnet. The firmware then recognises the height above the bed.
there is a magnet in the thick and thin beds (and the aluminium one) on the older BfB 3000 it is mounted on a screw near the rear of the bed mountings.
