Firmware upgrade installer does not see printer

I am trying to upgrade the firmware of a 3d touch.  I connect to the printer with a usb cable but the installer software does not recognize that the printer is there.  The computer knows something was plugged in but it says it doesn't recognize the usb device.  I am using a regular usb A-D printer cable.  Is that correct?  I have tried a windows XP laptop and a win 8 laptop.  It didn't work for either.

Nevermind.  You can't have a usb drive and the printer cable in the computer at the same time or the installer seems to look at the drive.

I had the same problem with my Rapman3.2 initially which turned out to be a faulty motherboard.
